Cheap Ways To Give Your Mood A Boost

By Shawn Wilson
Apr 2, 2009
It's all doom and gloom these days. The Detroit Three are teetering on the edge and at last glance were leaning towards an abyss, manufacturing is in the toilet, the job market is dismal and the economy is in tatters. Reading the news, whether it be in print on via the web, while certainly cause for concern, is also enough to make a sane person head for the nearest bottle of scotch!

If all this negativity has got you down, here are some inexpensive (read 'cheap') ways of giving yourself a boost.

Invite friends over for dinner. This one is obvious, but it's funny how all the negative news can make us want to curl up into a miserable ball in front of the television, praying for Seinfeld reruns, because that at least is funny! Everyone's budget is stretched to the limit, so a dinner party is out of the questions. Instead invite one or two friends over for a meal. And be sensitive and sensible about it. If one of those friends has just lost their job, don't ask them to bring anything. You might feel better for having the company, but they'll be stressing out even more about their budget!

Take a walk. It's spring time after all! There are parts of the country where the tulips and daffodils are in full bloom, and a stroll around the neighborhood to view the springtime colors will lift even the gloomiest of moods.

Have a snowball fight. Just as it's springtime in parts of North America, there are still plenty of places with snow. Gather your family and friends and have an old fashioned snow ball fight. A half hour of fun and giggles will be a welcome relief from the daily grind, and beaning your best friend's obnoxious partner in the butt will be even better! Follow it up with homemade hot chocolate and everyone will go home satisfied.

Play a board game. Scrabble, Monopoly, Risk, Taboo and Trivial Pursuit are all favorites and you'll likely have no trouble rounding up additional players. Add a bottle of inexpensive wine or two, and you're in for an afternoon or evening of fun and laughter.

Do something different. If you usually spend your evenings in front of the television, turn it off, and turn on your favorite radio station instead. Try listening to a station you don't normally listen to. If you're a hard rock fan, try some classical, or jazz. Who knows, you might just end up expanding your musical tastes.

At the end of the day, the only person responsible for your mood is you.
