10 Mother's Day Gifts For Any Budget
Our mothers spend years and years of their lives raising us and taking care of us (heck, my 43 year old cousin Greg's mom is still raising him!). And what do they get in return? They get one day when they are shown at least some of the appreciation they deserve. When Mom only gets one special day for herself, you've got to make it good. Take her out. Tell her you love her. And best of all, get her a great gift.
Want to spoil your mom (or help your kids spoil their mom) like she deserves but don't know where to start? Read on for some great Mother's Day gift ideas. No matter your budget, you should be able to find something here that works for your income... and for your mom.
1. Homemade gift basket. If you look online (or in all of those tree-killing catalogs that clog up your mail box), you'll see more kinds of gift baskets than you could imagine anyone wanting. A similar theme throughout those catalogs? Their high prices. Unless you fill it with expensive items, a gift basket doesn't have to be expensive. Start off with a plain, inexpensive basket from the craft store, some ribbon, and a bit of filler, and make a basket yourself. Best of all, you can gear it towards what your mom loves. Wine, cheese, knitting or quilting supplies, gardening gear, you name it.
2. Spa days. Now, this probably doesn't sound like the most original gift idea in the world, but that doesn't mean it isn't one of the most well-received. Most moms --whether their kids live at home or not-- don't get as many chances to pamper themselves as they should. A day at a spa, complete with facials, massages, you name it, will do that for her.
3. A great memory. One of the best gifts you can give anybody, including your mother, is the gift of time. Of your time, to be exact. This year, instead of buying her expensive gifts and giving her a quick phone call, be there instead. Buy her tickets and then go with her to a play or a musical, or take her out to a lunch just for the two of you. Getting to spend time with you will be one of the best gifts she'll ever receive.
4. Family. Use Mother's Day as a chance to celebrate your family ties. Give mom a personalized family tree, arrange for the whole family to get professional photos made, or give her a photo album chronicling your childhood and your lives together. (Just a hint: all of these are a great choice if you want to make Mom cry on Mother's Day.)
5. Something pretty. Just because she's your mother doesn't mean Mom doesn't like to feel feminine and pretty sometimes. She may love it if your bought her the kind of item she won't generally buy for herself, like a designer silk scarf, a great pair of shoes, or a silky new robe.
6. Flowers. Obvious, right? Flowers can be a great addition to the gift you're already getting your mother, or they can be a wonderful gift all on their own. When you're shopping, don't overlook flowers that come in pots rather than with cut stems. She might love to keep your gift long after Mother's Day has passed. Think flowers sound a little boring? Buy and plant a tree for her in the backyard to celebrate all she's done for you.
7. Time away. Most moms have to take care of everything. So a great gift for any mom is simply a little bit of time away. Arrange for her (or her and her husband, or a girlfriend... or even the guy she met on an internet dating site!) to stay the weekend in a bed and breakfast. Even if the place is in her home town, she'll have a great time being away. Offer to take care of any kids or animals at home so she can have a stress-free weekend.
8. Homemade snacks. There's no gift quite like the gift you make yourself. And there's no gift for moms quite like chocolate! If you look online, you can find tons of recipes for homemade chocolates or, even better, chocolate covered strawberries. They're simple to make, and knowing you put the effort in will make Mom feel great. Before she complains about getting fat, of course.
9. Jewelry. What's Mother's Day without a piece of jewelry? While any jewelry will be well-received, the best kind of jewelry is that with a personal touch. Don't have a big budget? Check out eBay for vintage jewelry from the decade your mom was born.
10. Certificates. While this is a more popular gift for kids that still live at home to give to their mothers, all moms like to have little things done for them. Offer to do chores for her, or to come over more often for meals. Have young children and want to help them make their mother feel special on Mother's Day? Create and print your own certificates for things they can help Mom do around the house.
