Will the G20 Summit Fix Anything

By Shawn Wilson
Apr 3, 2009
Well for the first time the leaders of the 20 most powerful nations in the world are meeting and the big topic of the day is the economy. Whether you think this economy was caused mostly by the US mortgage meltdown it is the world's issue now and will require a team effort. Past all of the protesters that surrounded the summit yesterday for the most part it appears they are actually getting things done.

It will be interesting over the next couple of days to see exactly what type of progress they make. I have to say I was elated to find that the big discussion on day one was a stimulus package for developing countries. During this entire economic meltdown my biggest concern is that while all of us living in first world nations are being affected by the markets would we all in the end forget about the folks that really have it bad.

I mean how many of us have really been affected by this and how does that compare to those that have always had nothing? My family has all but eliminated going out to restaurants, something we used to do at least three times a week is now only done once every two weeks. We have also decided to go from two vehicles to one, the lease is up on our truck and instead of buying a new one we're going to just live with one.

Now I am not taking anything away from those that have lost their jobs, it's a horrible feeling and families in first world nations are really suffering. That being said when I look at my situation, have I really had to sacrifice? No, I haven't. I love cooking at home and really, we are eating better tasting food that in the end is much more nutritious. As for having one vehicle, I mean come on we still have one car, boo hoo for those that have to live with only one vehicle!

What is really need to remind ourselves is that there are billions of people that are starving and these people were starving before the recession. I am cautiously optimistic that this new wave of funding coming from the G20 to those that are less fortunate than us is will in the end have a dramatic impact. This could become the good news story of the year, it's won't because our news systems prefer to focus on the doom and gloom, but I won't forget.

I have to applaud the G20 leaders so far for at least taking one day to discuss and put into action a financial aid plan for those that really need it, that in and of itself will in my eyes make this summit a success. Here is hoping this act and way of thinking will be contagious!
