Paintball can be appropriately termed as an active and stimulating sport which calls for strategic and tactical thinking by the players. There are a lot of different types of paintball games which appeal spectators. It can be a really exhilarating game to watch. To play paintball, areas specified as woods, arenas and fields specially made for "rec paintball" are appropriate. Paintball can be played in various manners.

Another name for paintball is known as woodsball as it is played in the woods. For scenario games or war-type games large woodsball fields may be used. Preparation of some woodsball fields is done so as to minimize undergrowth. At one time woodsball can be played by a small or large number of players. Paintball played in arenas or in rec facilities are swifter than this type of Paintball.

Two types of games namely speedball and xball are played in arenas. Arena paintball is played on smaller fields which noticeably are fenced with protective netting to safeguard the spectators from the stray paintballs. Manmade structures may also be a part of these fields sometimes, such as empty utility line spools, bunkers, and inflatable structures.

An empty field consisting only of inflatable obstacles and roofless bunkers that are distributed equally on each half of the field is used to play the speedball game. For the players this format is more competitive and for the spectators more exhilarating.

Xball is a team game which consists of multiple rounds of center flag played until the clock comes to a halt. One point is granted to the team winning the round. When the clock runs out, the team leading with more points is declared as the winning team for the match. Xball matches which are played professionally last 50 minutes, comprising of two halves, whereas Amateur Xball games are played for shorter periods.

Freeform is the distinguishing trait of Rec style paintball. For playing this paintball fairly open areas covered by manmade structures or bunkers are used. When re-enactment games are played it consists of hundreds of players otherwise can be played by smaller number of people also.

Teamwork is necessary in paintball regardless of the type of paintball being played . Some team members will guard while others move through the field and some will give off cover shots when it is required of them. Teamwork essentially needs effective communication.

Because teamwork and communication are so important, clubs, church groups, and even corporations have enthusiastically embraced paintball games as a way for people to learn to work together and where everyone contributes. The large and growing popularity of paintball facilities and teams attests to its broad appeal.
