Being An Umpire Isn't As Easy As It Looks

By Sebastian Marders

A referee plays a particularly critical role in any game. He is the call maker, the only line of enforcement for the rules of play and decorum in the field. A referee has some rules to follow also to properly be what he is. Since this person plays a particularly gigantic role, he therefore has to know what he must and must not do when he is doing his job.

In the great game of baseball, this person is known as the umpire. Some people love him and some people hate him. But make no mistake, the final call rests with him. Here are the things that he should always adopt as a way of doing the job.

Referees in the field are not authorized to chat to players or coaches. He must stay in his appointed position at any cost. They are tasked to firmly control the game and keep the discussion of calls in the field to a minimum.

He must keep his uniform in good shape. It is important not to show up with a shabby outfit because he carries the name of baseball, therefore he must appear and be respectable at every point. A referee should be courteous with club officers but not to the limit of being so acquainted with them in any way.

Once a referee enters a field, he should stick to his duty of umpiring the ball game. A referee shouldn't be brought down by feedback or protest when an issue happens in the game. The simplest way to deal with the situation is to consult the rule book.

The power of the referees judgment must be respected, as he is the sole official representative of baseball in the field, and strives to keep the game rolling smoothly along. He must thus have a hold of his temperance and self control when bad scenarios happen.

A referee must not take sides with either team. Always keep an eye on the ball. He could have missed something with less attention paid, that may lead to misunderstood choices. A referee should wait till a play is over to make choices. Referees should not hesitate to consult their associates. A referee must always be in a position to see each angle and bit of the play.

Those are the hard and fast rules of calling a game of baseball. To be a good umpire, you have to be able to make quick decisions, be confident in them, and hold your ground, even under argument. And if this is the road you choose, believe me, there will be arguments. Always be firm to gain respect from the folk in and out of the field. Without respect, you have nothing.
