Choosing A Graduation Present
Whether it's your son, your daughter, a niece or nephew or another special person in your life, graduating from college or university is an exciting time for everyone concerned. All the years of hard work, all nighters, not to mention to money spent, has all come to this; graduation!
Most of us want to mark the occasion with a gift, but what kind of gift? Choosing just the right thing can be a bit frustrating, so here are some helpful tips to get you started.
The first thing you'll need to settle on is how much money you're going to spend. Although this is an important occasion, it's not worth blowing the budget and maxing out your credit card.
Second, think of the age of the graduate. Chances are you wouldn't buy the same thing for your 23 year old son that you would for your wife who returned to school at the age of 51!
If your graduate is moving to a new city, consider a gift that would be welcome in their new home. Perhaps you can pay for the rental of the moving truck or trailer, or, if your budget is strained and the distance isn't too far, offer to help with the move. Try putting together a 'Welcome to CITY' package, with gift certificates for restaurants, movie passes, maps of the area and other information they'd find useful.
If you're thinking about jewelry, consider buying something that can be engraved and have the graduation date engraved on the piece. A locket or bracelet is ideal for something like this.
Think about their new job. Perhaps a magazine subscription that's career related would be a good pick; likewise a membership to a professional association or society that's geared to their career. For instance, if you're grad is heading into Human Resources, then a membership to the state/provincial Human Resources Professionals Association could be just the thing.
If your graduate is into 'toys' think latest and greatest. I don't know of a single graduate who wouldn't love to have an IPhone, or perhaps even a Blackberry. Before you purchase one of these though, make sure that the recipient is able to afford the monthly bills that go along with it!
If you're stuck for an idea, gift cards are always a welcome. As with any gift, choose a gift card that is appropriate for the recipient. If they're moving into a place of their own, consider a card for a large department store. A newly graduated lawyer could welcome a new wardrobe, so a gift card to a higher end clothing store would be a good idea.
Whatever you decide to give them, make sure the gift is age appropriate, and also suitable for the relationship you have with them.
