Fireproof Safes and Avoiding a False Sense of Security

If you are thinking of buying a new fireproof safe for your home or business it is important to come up with a list of all the options you require before you start shopping for one. Regardless of whether the fireproof safe you are shopping for is for your home or business, it is necessary to pre-determine the size you will need and the budget you have to spend on the safe.

It is extremely important to understand the difference between a fire resistant safe and a fireproof safe. A fire resistant safe will not guarantee your valuables and documents will be entirely safe in the unfortunate event of a fire, whereas a fireproof safe can make a larger claim. Although neither is a full proof way to ensure your valuables will be safe, a fireproof safe is a much stronger guarantee than a fire resistant safe.

Because safes are tested before they are released to the market you can feel confident that if your safe says it is fireproof, then it is. A fireproof safe should hold the temperature inside below 350 degrees Fahrenheit for a certain amount of time. Above that 350 degrees paper starts to burn. Fireproof safes work by releasing the steam that becomes trapped within the safe, but it cannot guarantee against moisture from video tapes, CD's or DVD's. These types of items could still be damaged in a fire from the steam.

If it is CD's, DVD's and that type of item you would like stored you would want to look at purchasing a media fireproof safe. The technology used in this type of safe is far more advanced and therefore this safe wields a much higher price tag than an ordinary fireproof safe.

When shopping for a new safe, make sure that you get what you're paying for. Ask the company's representatives or expert many questions about the safe. Use their expertise to guide you on what the best options are best for you.

If you get a cheap safe, without asking all the necessary questions, you may still be in jeopardy of losing valuables during a fire. Be sure to think of every item you would want stored in the safe so the representative can recommend the right size with the necessary amenities. Sometimes it's better to spend a little more initially, but ensure that your jewelry, documents, CD's or other items are kept safe, even in case of house or business fire.
