Parent Alert - New Cell Phone Fad Can Send Your Teen to Prison
Many American parents may have not heard of a new trend yet, but they should. Unlike some other trends that may be harmless, this one can have your child locked away for years in prison. Many teenagers now are rapidly engaging in the new activity called sexting.
Sexing is basically the act of phone sex over a cell phone, but rather than with audio, with text. As simple as it may sound, it gets more complex. You see, texting now comes with a popular function called photo sharing. Photo sharing allows images to be taken and transmitted with a text message from a cell phone and sent immediately and read. Every cell phone now comes with a camera and texting capabilities these days, so chances are your teen already uses this technology.
There could be a debate on the good vs. evil aspect of this new trend. It could easily be argued that it is for the most part innocent even, however, law enforcement is starting to look at the practice in a new light.
Sexting can be a dangerous practice and has already lead to many sexual assault cases. Law enforcement has been struggling with dealing with the victims and what to do about it. While sexual predators have been the main focus in the past, they are now eying the teens that engage in sexting.
Laws that have been made effective to protect your teen, can now send your teen to jail. If your teenager engages in sexting and sends an image over the Internet or their cell phone, they now can be fined, imprisoned, and put on a sex offender list. Easily your child can end up being a criminal with a record simply for exploring their sexuality and not even engaging in a sexual act.
With technology available to teens nationwide, parents need to now not only discuss the threat of sexual predators online, they need to discuss the possible threat of incarceration. By not discussing sexual issues with your teen, they can very well end up being charged and prosecuted as a sex offender.
It may not be easy to control a hormonal teenager even with all the parenting skills in the world. If you find yourself worrying about your child and their behavior you may want to explore other options to protect them. One option is to block Internet options from their text plans so that they cannot send or receive images from their phone. Remember that simply unsubscribing from the add on service may not stop the service altogether so you will want to make sure the phone is entirely blocked from that function.
