How To Fix Corrupt Registry Entries?

By Jerry Steel
Apr 19, 2009
What are corrupt registry entries? These are keys and values that have become garbled or associated with programs other than the ones they should be referring to.

The Windows registry is organized as registry hives, registry keys, sub keys, and registry values. Registry hives are groups of keys that are stored together as a group. These keys and values are the settings that dictate the behaviour of the different applications, programs and hardware/software drivers in the Windows PC. Hence the corruption of the keys and values will make it impossible for the operating system to locate the files and applications that power the power the hardware or software in use. Windows may throw up error messages that may read as "unknown hardware error" or "missing or corrupt files" or system hive error".

This corruption the Windows Registry is not a virus or an infection. However, such corruption could occur because of a virus or an infection. The corruption merely means that the keys and values have been disturbed and do not point to the correct location any longer. Such disturbance can occur while the computer is shut down or powered off suddenly or invaded by a virus or during the installation of an application that has a poorly crafted installer.

Faulty hardware can also corrupt the keys and values in the Windows Registry. If the problem of registry corruption occurs with repeated efforts of installation, the hardware company may have to be called in to check out the software driver installer or the equipment that came with the equipment. The hardware should be immediately disconnected from the computer, the installation uninstalled and the registry cleaned with a registry cleaner like RegCure, RegistryFix or Registry Easy.

It is also a good idea to take a backup of the windows registry before installing any new hardware or software, so that the registry can be restored to its original restore point if the new installation corrupts the registry. Most of the registry cleaning tools referred above provide for backing up and restoring the registry at the click of a button.

Also, by restoring your registry, you can make sure your computer's speed and efficiency will be greatly improved. PCs are like anything else, they need maintenance. Unfortunately, so many people leave them clogged with unwanted and useless files, programs and most of all; registry entries. You don't have to endure a slow PC, try downloading a registry cleaner and see how many errors it will find!
