The Amazing Power Of Board Games
In todays society, board games abound, in fact the history of board games goes back thousands of years. Some of the earliest known games date back to around 3500 BC. During those pre dynastic times in Egypt, a popular game called Senet was played. It was a passing game and some of these ancient Senet boards have been found in burial chambers of high ranking Egyptians along with paintings of the Senet game. It was very popular in Egypt in these times.
The Egyptians believed strongly in the gods of those days, and that the gods favored the game of Senet. They believed that being buried with a Senet board would help them in their after life. Now if this was the case as is evidenced that it surely was by historical artifacts, it is a prime example in history where a singular board game has such an extreme importance attached to it.
People are social creatures by nature, aggressive and competitive with a will to dominate. This behavior is not just limited to warriors. But unlike certain types of people who literally do try to take over the world, average people can experience the thrill of victory in a less real manner by playing their friends and relatives in board games. Even your smallest child likes to win and beat out their friends in games.
That is one of the reasons why people like to play board games so much. People play them for fun and adventure , but there is an added benefit to playing them as well. What a lot of people don't realize is the stimulating effect playing a challenging board game can have on your brain. When your brain is challenged and is scheming to win, it accelerates the neurons, which is good, for an active brain is a healthy brain.
When you do not use your brain, it can diminish the capacity in which it can function. When you do use your brain, it helps it grow strong and remain vital and healthy. It really is a case of use your brain or your brain diminishes in the capacity that it is capable of. It has been proven in many studies of elderly people , that those who get a regular regimen of educationally challenging stimulation are a lot less prone to mental decay and lethargic behavior.
In many elementary schools, board games are often used as a fun learning tool to teach concepts such as: shapes, colors, math, reading and much more. Teachers have learned over the ages, and kids will agree, if you make learning fun, then more learning will usually occur. That is also one of the great aspects of board games in todays society. Another reason is that they are still low tech, and do not even require electricity. With all of the high tech video game systems available, board games are still loved by millions of people.
Yes the popularity of board games is wide spread, and it is not surprising that at times, as in ancient history, that a board game can become almost mythic in its influence on the peoples culture.
