Most Home Movers Fail To Check Smoke Alarms
The results of a recent survey by moveme.com has found that 71% of people moving into a new home do not bother to check whether the smoke alarms work. Just the remaining 9% ensure that they check the smoke alarms or install equipment as soon as they move in. Only 10% of survey respondents follow Fire Service guidelines to check them on a weekly basis.
The research also reveals that the majority of people are not aware of how little smoke alarms can cost. Most respondents thought they cost in the region of between GBP 11 and GBP 20 when in reality they are more likely to set you back a mere GBP 5 or thereabouts.
In response to the results of the survey, the Chief Executive of moveme, Jonathan Turpin commented Despite a recent fire safety awareness campaign by the Fire Service, it seems that most people are still unconcerned about reducing the risks in their own home.
People moving house should make it a top priority to check for working smoke alarms as soon as they arrive, followed by a check of the general electrical safety of the property and assessment of exit routes.
The average three-bedroom home should have a minimum of two smoke alarms, which must be tested weekly and have their batteries replaced every year. While moving home is a hectic experience, it is critical to make fire safety a top priority.
Fire Service advice is to ensure that a working smoke alarm is present within your home. Most fire related deaths are caused by being overcome by smoke and fumes, therefore a smoke alarm gives you and early warning giving you extra time to escape from a fire.
Every home should have at least one working smoke alarm, so make this a priority when you move in. They are readily available from supermarkets, DIY stores and electrical shops and only cost around GBP 5.
Choose one that complies with British Standard 5446 part one, and place it where you will be able to hear it wherever you are in the house - even if you are asleep. There should be one on each level of the house and they should be placed as near to the centre of the ceiling as possible - avoiding light fittings. Try not to place them too close to kitchens or bathrooms.
Test it every week to make sure it works properly and follow manufacturers instructions at all times.
