The Magic City Miami

Aug 17, 2007
What Manhattan is to the state of New York, Miami is to Florida. Its a state thats not unlike a big box of cereal if you can just get to the bottom of it, youll discover a nice surprise.

The Magic City is a place where the almost year round heat and humidity is matched by the heat generated by the people who live, work and play here.

Its famed cafe society is enhanced by its beautiful beaches, the crystalline Atlantic, Biscayne Bay and assorted azure waterways, a fabulous, frenetic nightlife, and a potent cocktail of visiting celebrities.

It has astounding cultural diversity which is apparent from the moment you set foot on its soil and hear the rise and fall of a dozen different languages being spoken. Tourists include New Yorkers, Cubans, South Americans, Europeans and assorted national and international types. Eventually it gave way to a tropical paradise, with multiple personalities from Spanish influenced and pre Castro Cubans to the iconic art deco architecture and today to just about every nationality you can think of.

In the 1940s, when vacationers began to arrive, Miami Beach was the centre of the action. Although years have passed and times have changed, the Beach remains a perennial hot spot.

Bal Harbour is located on the northern end of Miami Beach, Bal Harbour is the most exclusive neighbourhood in Greater Miami. Luxury resorts sit serenely amid the lush foliage and palatial homes.

The hip South Beach where walking is indeed acceptable and plausible. While on South Beach get acquainted with the well preserved Art Deco District, which in 1979 was listed on the prestigious National Register of Historic Places, via an informative and entertaining walking tour with the Miami Design Preservation League.

Downtown Miami although primarily a business district, theres lots to see and do downtown. Tour the design district between NE 36th and 41st Streets, or check out the museums. Retail shops, an open air crafts market, a half dozen restaurants and a pier. A tour of the bay be boat can accessed from the Port.

Coconut Grove is this bustling district and one of the oldest in Miami, it seems to just be hitting its prime. Full of energy and creativity, the Grove is as busy as South Beach, but in a different way. Instead of attracting models and body builders, it draws in artists, writers, and patrons of the arts. There are hundreds of fabulous shops and restaurants crammed within this small area.

Although we are loathe to endorse typical touristy activity in this city where anyone can blend in as a local, there are a few musts, including the magnificent Vizcaya Museum and Gardens.
