How Computers Have Revolutionized Our World

By Theodore Cartman
May 8, 2009
There has been nothing quite like personal computers in our modern world. They have totally changed the way we live and work not to mention the way we communicate and interact. Back in the 1930s, a researcher named Konrad Zuse produced what was then a prototype of the first computer ever called the Z1 computer. This was still a far cry from what we have today but it nevertheless formed the necessary foundation for others to build upon which they did to produce the sophisticated machines that we have today.

Others build upon Zuse's idea and with private and government research money, took computer innovation to its next stage. In 1944, the research of two men, John Atanasoff and Clifford Berry, both from Iowa University produced a version of the personal computer based on Zuse's model. It could perform simple computing tasks and from here there was no looking back.

Harvard University, then took it a notch higher and partnered with IBM, the business conglomerate in 1953 to produce what was then the world's first sophisticated computer. Even then, computers were still gigantic and occupied huge spaces and used a lot of power.

Computers have completely changed the way the world lives and works. Today, we encounter them in almost every office although there are still many regions in the world where they are yet to make an impact. All in all, working without computers is inefficient and cumbersome. Take for instance calculations. It would take days if not years for companies to do simple calculations especially if they have lots of material and inventory. Computers simplify all this and allow businesses to become more agile.

Another use of computers is communication. With computers has come the wondrous world of the Internet or what is called in other circles, the World Wide Web or Information Superhighway. As much as computer has changed the way we work, they have also revolutionized the way we communicate. The term "the world is a smaller place" or phrases like "global market place".

Computers have made communication so easy and seamless we can now reach out to others across the globe instantaneously. Email, chat rooms, Instant Messaging and Video Messaging has almost resulted in the eradication of snail mail.

All this has been made possible by computers connected to the Internet via wireless and wired networks. Large firms such as Microsoft, Yahoo and Google have contributed to this by running sophisticated web applications that have made it possible to chat in real time with someone on the other side of the globe. This has completely changed the way we conduct meetings and even run classrooms and training.

Businesses can now even open branches in other countries faster because the top level management can communicate with lower management via video conferencing. People can actually see each other regardless of where they are located and all this is courtesy of the advent of computers and the Internet. Computers have evolved a lot since and are now in almost half of all US households and most offices in the rest of the world.
