By Donna Price
May 10, 2009
Goal setting is one of the priorities of being an entrepreneur. Goals help you to stay on track. You move in the right directions when you set your goals in alignment with your vision and your values. First develop your vision, then you can break it down into smaller goals. Each smaller goal takes you in the direction of your vision.

Goals are the driving force behind business. When you forget your direction it becomes harder to achieve the vision. It really just takes one small step after another to achieve great success. It is the repetition of the same small steps each day that move you forward. By setting goals you are able to stay focused and on maintain momentum.

Celebrating each small step and success can give you energy for continuing to focus and work on being a successful entrepreneur. Often small business owners get discouraged and don't follow through on the tasks that they have identified as important. By being consistent in your implementation you continue to make progress. Setting up a system of tracking your goals and the daily actions that you need to take will help in accomplishing these.

There are some simple strategies for implementing goals consistently.

1. Write your goals down and keep them in front of you, right where you can see them. Keep your goals simple. Don't create a huge document that you will never look at.

2. Create a simple chart for tracking your goals, and then really track them. When you review your goals each week you stay focused.

3. Track your goals weekly. Scoring your goals help to give you a picture of where you are at.

4. Celebrate each success, build energy and momentum by acknowledging what you have accomplished.

5. Find a friend or colleague to be a goals partner and share your progress with each other

6. Identify your roadblocks and work to overcome them. Everyone has things that get in their way, that stop them from taking the action they most need to take. It is something to look at and resolve in order to really achieve the level of success you are striving for.

7. Keep your goals in front of you:Post them on the refrigerator; Post them on your computer screen or bulletin board in your office. This helps to keep the plan alive and focused.

8. Read your goals and your vision everyday and identify your steps for the day. Again, this helps with focus, energy and keeps you moving. Your goals and vision should be inspiring to you. Reading and reconnecting each day with them is fun.

Having a plan that you can focus on and keep in front of you helps to keep your momentum going. Entrepreneurs that don't have a goal plan or strategic plan often are not moving forward in a strategic way. They are operating from a place of hope and not a place of planned success. As an entrepreneur striving for greater success you want to operate strategically -- that means a plan!
