Take Control Of Your MBA Recommendation Letters
When trying to be accepted to an MBA program, your recommendation letters can be one of the most important aspects of your application. These letters provide the school with information about your leadership skills and personality given from other people. They can be a huge determining factor in the success of your application and need to be taken seriously. You can take steps to ensure that your letters are a big help in getting you into the program you want. Here are some tips to assist you in providing successful letters of recommendation:
Choose the person to write your letter carefully. The people writing your recommendation letters should know you well. They need to be able to speak personally of your strengths, your leadership abilities and your business skills. Their title within the company means less than their personal knowledge of you and your abilities. It will not do you much good to have a CEO write a letter for you if they barely know you. You will be better served by a letter written by your direct supervisor who can give examples of time that you have impressed them with your abilities and your personality.
It is a good idea to choose people from different areas of your life. That way you can accentuate what a well rounded person you are and how you have demonstrated leadership skills in various environments. This allows the school to know that you can excel anywhere not just in one company or one circumstance.
Schools have great confidence in former students. If you know someone who has completed the MBA program you are applying to, and they can attest to your leadership skills ask them to write one of your letters. They will be able to focus on the qualities that this program looks for and will have the respect of the school as a former student.
Give your references the information that will help them help you
The people writing your recommendation letters may not be sure of what information to include. You can help them write the best letter by providing them with as much information as possible. Give them a copy of the recommendation letter guidelines provided by the school. This way they know exactly what the school is hoping to learn from their letter. Give them a copy of the information you are handing in with your application. If they can read your essay and personal statement then they can make sure that what they write coincides with the information you are providing and compliments it.
Give them a copy of your resume and list of your accomplishments so that they can refer to these while coming up with the qualities they want to focus on in their letter. Provide them with some suggestions as to what you would like them to mention. All of your letters should provide the school with different information about you. If each person knows what qualities they should focus on they can come up with personal examples of how they have witnessed you demonstrating your leadership skills.
Your letters should also mention a weakness that you have and how you improve yourself and deal with those weaknesses. The school knows you are not perfect and needs to know that you can deal with difficulties as well as strengths.
A well thought out and planned MBA recommendation letter can help you reach your goals and be one step closer to the career path of your dreams.
