The First Step To Living In San Miguel

By Matthew Stanton
May 10, 2009
The town of San Miguel in Allende, Mexico maybe small compared to, say, Los Angeles and Paris or even San Francisco. But year in and out, it has been considered as a most-sought destination by thousands of Americans and Canadians. A couple of European expats are starting to settle in the unassuming Mexican town as well.

Recently, the rave about living in San Miguel has been louder when UNESCO declared the town as a World Heritage Site. It was a great honor for a town, which has so much to offer, but whose residents are still under a relatively economic development.

It is not debatable that Mexico is such a nice place of consideration for permanent stay or retirement. But it is well suggested that you do not take the words of those people who have been living in the Mexican town for years. You have to experience it for yourself to make a rightful decision. After all, it is not an easy task to move out of your place of work and the birthplace of you and your family. Trying on a week or so vacation in San Miguel is perhaps the best initial step to take. So let us try to get to know more about San Miguel Allende here and what to expect in this fabled Mexican town.

San Miguel is one of the top Mexican destinations, probably next to Cancun and Mexico City, and it receives more than 100,000 tourists every year. While it is Mexico, it is not a resort town. It is more like a cultural art town that is teeming with diverse and interesting mingling of different cultures from the colonial past and present.

From the U.S., you can reach San Miguel through plane. The town has two nearby airports being served by several major airlines: Aeropuerto del Bajio and Aeropuerto Internacional de Queretaro. The third and cheaper option, although probably not as convenient, is to go San Miguel via Mexico City. Mexico City is just a four-hour drive to San Miguel. You can book for hotel accommodations and such beforehand or you can ask for travel tips from people you know who are living in San Miguel for years.

There are a lot of options for hotel accommodations and vacation rentals and you can even book them through the website before you get to the town. But nothing really beats being a Boy Scout in preparing you with some information like hiring a tourist guide or making the trip more like an adventure. There is no right or wrong way. You just have to choose the option that is more convenient and practical for you given all the considerations.

You can check out for online travel guides and maps because these things will prove handy later on. Be a little familiar with the map of San Miguel and know the significant places not to miss during the trip. It is also helpful if you know some common Spanish phrases to use in your tour because you are dealing with a non-English country. It is likely that San Miguel will fascinate you with its wonderful weather all throughout the year and the general spirit of the town. Make your trip a memorable one before making the decision of living in San Miguel is worth the hassles.
