Mykonos - Steer Clear of the Madness and Find Tranquility
Mykonos is the ultimate Greek island, the 24/7 party zone of the Cyclades. Dancing in the streets, all-night parties, and the sinful 12 Gods circuit party that goes on day and night for almost a week. Mykonos is ALL THAT and sooo much more; it can be a tranquil paradise if you simply steer clear of the madness. Just a short drive out of town, breathtaking empty oases await to be discovered. You can spend your vacation on paradise just listening to the waves and counting the stars with the man of your dreams.
A 10-minute hike from Platis Yialos, Paranga Beach is a picture perfect shore big enough to choose the spot you want according to your mood. The south side is calm and sedate, with many people reading and lounging in the sun. You can rent a beach lounger and an umbrella and have lunch in the shade of grapevines before venturing back to the scorching sun for an afternoon of swimming and sunbathing. Agrari and Elia beaches are large with fine powdered golden sand just perfect for a quiet afternoon of swimming. Agrari is tranquil, and Elia has a variety of high end resorts/spas, tavernas and bars and offers water sports and parasailing. Watermania, on a hillside behind Elia is a huge aqua park where a party atmosphere reigns daily; the absolute Mecca for kids of all ages.
On days when the notorious Aegean winds are strong, Kalo Livadi one of the few pebbly beaches on Mykonos is your best bet to beat eating sand all day long. The beach spans as far as the eye can see and has the clearest water in Mykonos. The closest beach to the main town of Mykonos is Ornos, this beach is usually overrun with families and tourists on package vacations. But it's still possible to have a nice swim and relax under the sun. Farther north, accessible only by car or scooter, are several pretty beaches. Take the road north heading to the town of Ano Mera to get to Panormos, the largest and most popular of the northern beaches. Close to Panormos are many small coves and secluded beaches. Aghios Sotis is the farthest beach north reachable by car and is gaining popularity with the local population seeking some peace and quiet.
Contrary to popular perception Mykonos does have historical and architectural sites worth visiting that often go unnoticed by most of its visitors. One of the most famous architectural structures in Greece is Paraportiani. Its name means "inner door" to the medieval stone walls which encircled the area in ancient times. The Archaeological Museum houses marble sculptures, ceramics and jewellery. The Aegean Maritime Museum displays models of a collection of ships from the pre-Minoan period through to the 19th century and nautical and ancient artifacts related to the history of shipping on Mykonos. Finally you must visit Delos one of Greece's most famous archaeological sites, the island of the goddess Artemis, located 2 kilometers to the west of Mykonos reached by a short boat ride leaving every 20 minutes from the mainland. The entire island has been declared a national museum.
Mykonos is a seasonal island. The best months are May, June, September, and October when the weather is perfect, and everything less expensive. July and August are very crowded with a mixed tourist crowd. Yes, Mykonos seems like an enormous circus where everything is out of control. But the great thing is that with so many beaches, all large, with exquisite emerald-aquamarine water, you can still find some peace and quiet if you want.
