Smoke Alarms: Detecting Fires In The Earliest Stages
An ounce of prevention is worth an ounce of cure. Many of us would have heard of this quote. For those who have not, it means if you have bothered to prevent the mishap and it still happens, you are worth the cure. But if you never make any effort in the first place, you are not worth the cure. It is the same theory with fire accidents. There is no use crying and grieving after you lose your loved ones to a fire break-out. You should think of ways to prevent it in the first place!
One such way is by installing smoke alarms in your house. Its name says it all. Smoke alarms detect smoke from fires in the initial stages and activates the alarm. This alarm gives you two options- to either fight the fire or evacuate the house immediately with your loved ones. Research has proven that many people were saved from fire accidents because of smoke detectors. Although their belongings and house may have been destroyed, they still have their family with them.
You could protect your family with the help of smoke detectors too. There are three types of smoke detectors available on the market. They are Ionisation, Optical and Combined.
If you are looking to purchase a smoke detector at a relatively low price, Ionisation is the ideal one. The advantage of Ionisation over the other smoke detectors is that it has the ability to detect very small specks of smoke. In short, it is ideal for small fires. However, it is not as responsive to fires caused gradually over time. As such, if your hazard zone is the kitchen, the Ionisation detector may not be very ideal unless you only use chip pans.
The second type is Optical smoke detectors. The only drawback of this product is its price. Compared to Ionisation, it is relatively expensive. However, it is a quality product. It is able to detect any kind of fire around the house. It could be anything from electrical point melting to chip pan fires. But, it is less responsive to free burning fires such as match sticks. This smoke detector is ideal for usage in houses with grown-up children and at a workplace.
The third type is the combination of Ionisation and Optical smoke detector. Both the smoke detectors have a minor flaw and this minor flaw can be rectified by the other detector. As such, Combination smoke detectors are better when compared to the individual smoke detector. For households with small children and elderly people, Combination smoke detectors are most ideal.
Now that you know what the three types of smoke detectors available are, it should be relatively easy to make a decision. Make up your mind and purchase one right away!
