How to Measure a Window for a Blind

By John McElborough

Measuring blinds can be a tricky business. Have you ever bought a blind only to find upon installing it that it is completely inappropriate and doesn't work correctly because it wasn't tailor-made to your window recess? Here is my guide to measuring your windows for blinds.

When measuring the window, make a note of the position of any handles, air vents or tiles which may effect or obstruct the fitting and function of the blind, to ensure that the location that the blind is fitted is perfect in terms of aesthetic and function.

Most blinds can be fitted to the wall, window frame, or fixed onto the lintel, giving you choice as to how you want the blind fitted. Be sure to specify which side you want the blind controls on, and always double check your measurement.

You can choose whether to locate your blind inside the window recess, or on the outside of the recess. 'Exact' means fitting the blind to the outside of the window recess, while 'recess' means the blind will be fitted inside the window recess, so no adjustments will need to be made as the blind will fit perfectly into your window.

Exact Measuring tips

Use these tips to measure your window for a blind to hang on the outside of the window recess.

Measure the exact width you want the blind to cover and write down this measurement.

You also need to measure the exact distance from the top of the window recess where the blind is to be fitted, and down the required length you want the blind to drop to (normally the window sill or lower). Write down this measurement, and you're on your way to a new blind.

It might be useful to check that the window sill projection won't obstruct your blind when it drops down.

Recess Measuring tips

Use these tips if you want the blind inside the window recess.

Measure the window recess width in three places, the shortest distance will be the measurement to use since otherwise the blind will become caught and perhaps damaged or impeded by the narrowness of the window recess.

Next, measure the drop of the window recess from the top, down to the window sill, again in three places. Make a note of the shortest distance for the same reason. These two measurements should be all you need to order the perfect blind for your window.

Sometimes it can be tricky to install a blind, so getting a professional to fit it is recommended. If you do fit the blind yourself be as careful as possible as the last thing you want to do is to damage the blind.
