Bath Is Best: From Walk In Baths To Gold Tapped Luxury

By Shaun Parker

What makes having a bath so good? In terms of efficiency and speed of the shower clearly beats the leisurely bubble bath or hot tub experience. But the good old fashioned bath still arguably has the edge over the more modern power shower. From walk in baths to marble marvels, the bath has a certain grace and elegance - a certain cinematic stature the showers lack. Showers are typically where bad things happen (think Psycho 1960), and although they have cinematic punch, the bath has a particular filmic quality.

Having a bath is much more of an event than taking a shower, providing a little quality time for the user. A whole range of products are available to make the bathing experience even more pleasurable, not least the ubiquitous rubber duck! Bubble bath lotions of course make the experience even more memorable.

Although they hadn't quite managed the technological heights of products such as walk in baths, the Egyptians and Indians are thought to have invented the earliest showering devices. Though of course, in the case of the Egyptians, bathing in milk was all the rage for the likes of Cleopatra, proving that the bath has always been the true star of personal hygiene.

Setting aside the time for a bath in our busy modern lives is not always easy. And if you live in an older house, might require you ensure there is enough water in the tank for the job. With your favourite music on, perhaps a hot cup of tea or coffee - the scene is set for true relaxation. Even for those who have difficulty getting in a standard bath, there are a multitude of walk in baths to choose from, so that everyone can experience a little 'me time' in the bath. The urge to fall asleep in the bath is difficult to fight - although one of the benefits of walk in baths is that you're unlikely to fall asleep whilst sitting upright.

The shower, a stand up affair, is by its very nature not going to let you really relax. Though refreshing, you're constantly reminded of all that water going down the plug hole. The shower is a modern invention designed to save water and get us in and out of the bathroom as quickly as possible.

Of course, not everyone likes you occupying the bathroom for so very long. A range of scare-mongering exists to prevent you lingering too long. Don't get washed down the plug hole. You'll shrivel up like a prune. You'll dissolve. There have been no recorded events such as these - so ignore the scaremongering and carry on! Ear plugs are always good for keeping those annoying knocks at the door at bay.

The bath, on the other hand, is a throwback from years gone by, stubbornly kept in many households despite the uneconomic use of water. If you're really into your baths, even if you use one of the many walk in baths out there, there are a number of ways to enhance the experience. Essential oils, bath salts and moisturisers all add an extra sense of luxury. For even more pampering, getting someone else to scrub your back with a loofah or natural bristle body brush might complete your bath time. From walk in baths to granny's ceramic monster, that bath is for using!
