What To Look For When Choosing A Self Storage Service

By Shaun Parker

The British move around a lot. They move house, on average, every few years. And with the UK climate as unreliable as it is, well-heeled Brits have a great love of moving abroad - or at least spending a few months avoiding the winters back home. Folks from the British Isles are also pretty intrepid too; wherever you are in the world, there are bound to be a few of them kicking about, tourists or ex-pats. With such a mobile populace it is no wonder that self storage services are so popular.

When someone is planning to leave the country for a few months - or even longer - deciding what to do with all of their possessions can be difficult. Leaving them with friends or family is always an option, but this might take up valuable space. Not only this, but having prized possession in a busy household can put things at risk - especially if kids are added to the equation!

Self storage can provide the ideal alternative. In terms of security it cannot be bettered, because usually the person renting the self storage space retains the only key. So even if you're on the other side of the world, sunning yourself on a long sandy beach - if your key is in your hand, you know that your items are all safe and sound back in your self storage facility.

Sometimes people think that it's only worth choosing a self storage service if they're going to be away for a long time - but a little research shows that various storage lengths are possible - along with various storage space sizes.
Even if you arrive at your self storage facility with a car simply jam-packed with your prized possessions and are concerned about their protection, most services provide all the bubble wrap and packaging materials you might need to ensure your things are safe. Some services also offer transport options if you don't have a car or van yourself. They'll put pretty much everything you need in storage - save perhaps your car or van!

There are a number of storage facility companies across the UK, most providing space for some very large items. The security offered by such self storage services is second to none, and can often be preferable to leaving items in an empty home - or indeed someone else's home.
In the vast majority of providers, the first point of contact is through the company's website. For the most part, these give those thinking of using self storage all the information they need. They can provide a tool for estimating the cost of storage, based on duration and amount of space used. They may even provide a video or animated walk through, so you can see exactly how the whole thing works. Many facilities provide space for both businesses and individual users, so most needs can be provided for.

The storage business is of course a fairly straight forward affair - simply renting out safe, dry space to people who need it. And the advantage of using one of the various larger, long established businesses is that you know they are very unlikely to go out of business while you are trekking through the Burmese jungle or enjoying your time share in Timbuktu!
