Botanical Gardens in Brisbane

There are two botanic gardens within Brisbane, one in the city and the other located at Mt Coot-tha. Both gardens managed and maintained by Brisbane City Council. The botanic gardens at Mt Coot-tha, founded in 1970, are considered Queenslands premier subtropical botanic gardens with 52 hectare featuring more than 20,000 plants and approximately 5000 species.

Established in 1855, The City Botanical Gardens, Brisbanes first botanical gardens, are set on a botanic reserve. It tests crops and plants, from around the world, agreeable with growing in a subtropical climate. These gardens are regarded as the cradle of Queensland horticulture.

From 1870 to 1974, eight major floods swept through the City Botanic Gardens, damaging valuable plant collections. Council looked at alternative flood-free sites for a new botanic garden and chose an open woodland site five kilometers from the city centre on the eastern slopes of Mt Coot-tha.Detailed planning and work began in 1970.In January 1976 the Brisbane Botanic Gardens, at the foot of Mt Coot-tha were opened to the public.

Plant collections now have a series of distinctly different gardens. Each arranged in thematic and geographical displays. Nearly half the total area is occupied by the Australian Plant Communities. As a visitor you can enjoy, educational and research programs, a reference and lending library, and the Queensland State Herbarium.

Since the gardens have numerous shaded areas, they are they perfect choice for an afternoon picnic. There are shelters, seating, toilets, and drinking fountains, at various locations throughout the gardens. There are three areas for Weddings, the Lakeside Restaurant that offers table service and caters for special events. The Brisbane Botanic Gardens are open every day between 8:00am and 5:30pm.
