Sydney is Australias Oldest City

Aug 17, 2007
Located on Australia s south east coast is Sydney built around Port Jackson it includes Sydney Harbour and is called the Harbour City.

A major international tourist destination notable for its beaches and twin landmarks Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge.

It has also played host to numerous sporting events, including the 1938 British Empire Games 2000 Summer Olympics and 2003 Rugby World Cup.

Sydney is Australia s oldest city and the country s capital in everything but name.

It is blessed with sun drenched natural attractions, dizzy skyscrapers, delicious and daring restaurants and superb shopping. Shopping in Sydney is fun if you venture out into the inner city areas such as Paddington, Glebe and Newtown, you will find a variety of boutiques, home grown designers, darling knick-knackeries, and bargain priced markets.

The Harbour Bridge named the Coathanger is one of Australia s most iconic sights.

The bridge has always been popular partly because of its sheer size and symmetry, its function in uniting the city, and because it kept a lot of people in work during the depression in the 1920s.

Walk it, climb it, and photograph it. From the northern end of The Rocks, the bridge crosses the harbour at one of its narrowest points, linking the southern and northern shores and joining central Sydney with the satellite business district of North Sydney.

The Opera House is so unique that it has been photographed many time, it appears on an army of cheap T shirts and every other Sydney postcard. It was built between 1959 and 1973.

The Opera House hosts theatre, classical music, ballet and film, as well as the seasonal opera performances. There is also a venue called The Studio, which stages contemporary arts events. There is free music at the Opera House on weekends and a craft market on the forecourt on Sundays.

Bondi Beach is one of Sydney s beaches. The foreshore is an mixture of ice cream parlours, designer cafes, greasy fish and chip shops and surf fashion stores.

Bondi brings sun lovers from around the world with its promise of sand, sun, surf and exposed skin. The average water temperature is 21C. If the ocean is to rough for swimming, there are saltwater swimming pools, which are also suitable for young children.

Thousands of people are rescued by the lifesavers that patrol the beach especially in summer, after Christmas Day and New Year Eve. Drinking is forbidden on the beach. You can also start the blissful Bondi to Bronte coastal walk from here.

Recent years have seen Bondi upgraded to fashionable status, and consequently rents and land prices have rocketed. Today the area flavour is a blend of old Jewish and European communities, New Zealanders who never went home, Irish and British working travellers, devoted surfers.

The main reason for coming here is to swim, surf, sit at cafes or just chill out.
