Responsible Use and Care of Your Rifle

Along with the fun and sporting challenge that comes with shooting a rifle or other firearm comes responsibility - if you're a gun owner or shooter you need to keep the following information in mind.

You are responsible to make sure the rifle is safe to operate. To do this, you have to provide regular cleaning and maintenance to the gun and you must know how to store it properly. If you aren't sure of a gun's ability to fire safely, you should have it inspected by a gunsmith.

Never shoot any firearm with ammunition that is not meant for that gun. There are a lot of different types of ammo, but only a certain kind works with each model of gun. Look for a stamp on the barrel of the rifle for the type of gun it is and the ammo required. The same info can be found on the packaging of the bullets, shells and cartridges - and often on the ammunition itself. Always be sure you have the correct ammo for your gun.

Never use alcohol or drugs while hunting, target shooting or handling firearms. Drugs and alcohol can impair your reasoning and your coordination, making firearms a danger to yourself and those around you.

When shooting - in the field and at the target range - always wear eye and ear protection. Ear plugs or tactical ear muffs will protect your hearing from the sharp and sudden report from your rifle. Eye protection is also important because when a bullet is fired it can emit hot gases and other debris that can damage your eyes. Even if you're not the one shooting, if you're near a gun during firing you should wear protection.

Before you take your shot be sure that you have identified your target. Do not fire at sounds or movement - you must know exactly what you are shooting at. Target identification is crucial in any shooting situation.

It's also important that you see around and behind your target. Don't shoot your rifle if there are people or houses near or beyond your target. Make sure there are no chances for dangerous ricochet from large rocks or metal objects.

Being a responsible shooter or gun owner goes beyond safety in the field. Proper storage of your firearm is important. Lock your rifles and other firearms in a gun case or safe or buy trigger locks. Extra care in storage is critical if there are children who may have access to your weapons.

If your gun has been in storage for a long period of time it should be cleaned and inspected before use. Make sure that there is no dirt or debris accumulated that could block the rifle barrel or cause a misfire.

Responsible use of a rifle is easy, safe and smart.
