Trucking Insurance Coverage when Transporting Radioactive Materials

By Steve Turner

The US federal and state laws require that all commercial truck drivers have Trucking Insurance coverage. There are a number of drivers that will be transporting hazardous materials mandating that theses drivers know all that is required to be safe and legal in doing so.

Safety should be one of the top priorities for commercial truck drivers, especially is they are transporting hazardous materials. Federal and state hazmat regulations will provide exact designs as to how these transportations are to be made. Failure to follow these regulations will result in the driver receiving fines, penalties, and even being prohibited from working in the trucking business in the future.

Because of the sensitivity of these materials drivers must set their course along state designated routes. Drivers are required to provide a written route plan and any deviation from said plan must be documented between the driver and shipper. These route plans include information such as planned stops, estimated departure and arrival times, and a list of emergency telephone numbers for the states through which they travel.

There are specific types of training that drivers have to obtain to be able to transport radioactive materials. This training has to be within the previous two years to be relavent. Knowledge about the properties of the radioactive materials being transported as well as procedures to follow if in an accident are a requirement.

There is a list of information that drivers are required to have on them at all times. This includes in part their driver's license number, training completion dates, name and address of the trainer, and the route planning on being taken.

Filing a report with the Office of Enforcement and Compliance must be done by the driver within 90 days of departure. Disclosure of the route plan, names of the carrier and shipper, and a copy of the shipping paper that decribes the radioactive material being carried will be necessary.

Because of all that is entailed and the risks involved with transportating radioactive materials, drivers need to make sure that they are as well educated as possible. Since there is such a huge risk financially and physically if there is an accident with a truck transporting radioactive materials, drivers need to make sure that they buy the right amount of trucking insurance coverage.
