Why Preperation is important in Public Speaking
Proper Preparation Prevents Poor Performance is known as the 5P principle. Just writing a speech does not make you prepared.
I gave a presentation at university on futuristic space flight. After hours of research I knew the topic extremely well. Although I spent a great deal of time on learning the topic I spent very little time practicing the presentation. The result being the presentation was not very good.
Proper preparation consists of Writing the speech. Good speakers never read there speeches, but great speakers always write their speeches. Know exactly what you want to say. Have your speech written out as if you are going to present it and have the speech summarized with all of the major points.
Say you speech out loud (not just to yourself). The spoken word and the written word are very different. A speech that may look good on paper may not sound good when you say it out loud.
Saying a speech out loud after writing it has 2 main benefits 1. It helps you remember your speech 2. Give you the opportunity to improve your speech after hearing it
Rehearse your speech as if you were giving it to an audience. Saying a speech out loud is only part of the presentation. It is important to stand up as if you are giving the speech to an audience. This will give you not only a sense of what you are going to say but it will show you when to pause how to make eye contact, and how to gesture more effectively.
Receive feedback. Before giving your speech in a formal situation present it to 1. a friend 2. a family member 3 or a colleague Ask them for honest feedback. This will help you make corrections to your speech before you make a formal presentation
The more you practice your speech the better it will be.
