Choosing the Best Waffle Maker For Your Family
A waffle is a type of breakfast pastry that is made of batter, which is then poured onto a heated mold called a waffle iron. The characteristic patterns of the waffle maker give the waffle its unique, trademark shape. Different types of waffles can be made depending on the different ingredients in the batter and the shape of iron used to make the waffle.
Waffle making came to America in 1620 when the pilgrims first landed on the North American continent. Waffles were quite popular European fare, and Thomas Jefferson used to hold waffle parties or "frolics" as they were called. Waffles have been around for centuries, and in the Middle Ages, waffles were crafted by using two metal plates affixed by a hinge, with a wooden handle. This was held to cook over a fire and flipped for even cooking. These early waffles were referred to as wafers.
There are a variety of types of waffles and waffle makers. For example, Belgian or Brussels waffles are wider and deeper than the American waffle. These debuted in America at the 1964 World's Fair in New York. Belgium is also the home of the Lige waffle.
Round, Hong Kong style waffles are made with four quarters and often filled with peanut butter before being folded in half. Stroopwafels are a Dutch creation similar to the Hong Kong style in that they are drizzled with a luscious mixture of butter, syrup, brown sugar, and cinnamon and then folded in half to eat.
A heart-shaped waffle iron yields Swedish style waffles. These are typically filled with berries or jams and topped with fresh whipped or sour cream. Norway has salted waffle varieties adorned with bleu or brown cheeses as well.
Modern waffle makers are electric, non-stick, and easy-to-use with light indicators that tell you when to apply the batter, and even when to remove the cooked waffle. Waffle makers in the US come in a number of fun styles, including cartoon characters like Disney's perennially popular Mickey Mouse, as well as flowers, hearts, and other designs. Children in particular will love these cute, shaped waffles.
Apart from choosing the shape of your waffle iron, you'll want to consider other features. For example, if you want to conserve space, you may choose a waffle iron in a compact, side-storing model, as well as a retractable cord. Or, you might want a waffle iron with all of the bells and whistles, like the ability to grill meat, make Panini and other grilled sandwiches, or an electronic model with an easy to read LED display and beep signals to let you know when to add batter, and when the waffle is ready.
Depending on what you are going to use your waffle maker for and how often you are going to use it, you can purchase waffle makers online or in department stores. If you require one with all the modern gadgets or if you are going to use it very often, then a restaurant supply store is your best bet. Just remember that once you begin making them, chances are that your family will be asking for waffles often! They then can become a healthy part of a balanced breakfast.
