5 Tips That Will Improve Your Speeches
Since ancient times, public speeches have always held great importance in politics as well as to express one's opinions and views on some issue or matter of concern. Many speakers have been known throughout history to move worlds with their speeches, and gather the loyalty of their audience. The effectiveness of a speech not only depends on the speaker but also on the material, wording and expressions used.
Preparing a speech is just as difficult as delivering it. Many people are of the opinion that making a speech is perhaps a more important task than preparation for delivering the speech. Many people have stage fright, which increases when the speaker is not sure about the material of the speech - and thus finds great difficulty in delivering the speech with full confidence. Giving presentations and speeches is the best way to present a new idea or gain the loyalties of the masses.
Preparing an effective speech is an art, and many people do not understand the depth of this art. Proper consideration is needed to prepare material for the speech, its orientation, and style of delivering the speech. Better speeches and presentations guarantee good business PR, which is important for a successful business. Following are some of the main points to be considered, which will help achieve this objective.
(1) The first and foremost thing to do is to make plan for the objectives of the speech and what outcomes are to be derived from the speech. This is the most important part of the speech, as anyone who does not know what he intends to achieve from the speech is like a puppet, and in such a case the impressiveness and the effectiveness of the speech amounts to zero. The purpose or aim of the speech can be to educate the audience, or to gain their loyalty and support, or to influence their mentality. Whatever the objective may be, the orientation of the speech and the material should be properly organised according to that aim.
(2) The structure and content of the speech should be appropriate. In most cases a formal structure should be used, which makes the speech or presentation effective and gains the attention of the audience before the beginning of the actual speech. Overfilling of the content should be avoided. Humans have a limited ability to absorb some information or knowledge at a given time. A speech should not over step these limits, as it would make the speech dull and boring, and the audience would not be able to comprehend the main idea of the speech.
(3) The material of the speech should be authentic and well researched. Using unauthentic sources for information is the cause of serious downfall for many speakers. If the material of the speech is not well researched, then the speaker might be providing wrong information to the audience and it might cause problems with the credibility of the speaker if the audience knows the real truth.
(4) Using examples and personal life experiences will make the speech more effective. It is also a good idea to use examples and experiences that are common to most of the audience, as it will help them grasp the idea more effectively.
(5) The beginning and the ending should be effective, and the whole content should be organised in a way that makes it interesting for the audience. Always use plain language, and words with ambiguous or difficult meanings should be left out, to make sure that the audience gets the idea in the same sense it was intended to be delivered.
