When To Buy Your Golf Clubs
If you've been bitten by the golf bug and you're just getting started playing, your impulse might be to rush right out and buy a bag of expensive clubs so you can play (or at least look) like the professionals. But nothing can ruin a budding golf career like owning a set of clubs that don't fit your game.
Of course, buying an inexpensive set of golf clubs "off the rack" or a bag of used clubs can be just as damaging to your potential game. "Off the rack" clubs are one-size-fits-all and advertised to be perfect for the "typical" golfer. But what's a typical golfer? How tall is he or she? How much power do they have or need?
What every golfer - typical or not - needs is a set of clubs that offer the best combination of shaft length and flexibility, grip, loft, lie and swing weight, just for starters. So what can you as a new golfer do? The best answer - set yourself up for a clubfitting.
This is something a lot of beginners are afraid to do because they are intimidated by the thought of hitting shots over and over in front of a golf pro or teacher. Rather than looking foolish, a golfer who is serious enough to get a fitting is serious about the game and every professional appreciates that. No one will make fun of you as long as you're respecting the game.
Clubfittings aren't as expensive as you might think either. You can usually get a fitting at almost any pro shop for under $100. Just set up an appointment at a pro shop or with a golf pro, preferably a teaching pro. Although some aspects of the fitting can be performed indoors, it's critical to get your swings evaluated outdoors. That way the pro can observe your ball flight and make adjustments and recommendations there. The result of this fitting is that you'll have a bag of golf clubs that are specifically suited to your height, strength, speed and swing characteristics.
If you really feel you're not ready for a custom golf club fitting, get some practice in using rental or borrowed clubs. Almost all driving ranges have clubs for rent, so take a few different sizes out and get some swings in. You could also buy a couple of inexpensive golf clubs from a pro shop or driving range. You can probably even pick up some cheap clubs from a friend who bought the wrong set before getting his own clubfitting.
