Home Fire Safety Ladders

Given that many us live in upper floor flats or houses of at least two storeys, it is surprising that not very many of us give any thought to how we would escape from the upper floors of our home in the event of a fire breaking out and blocking our exit. Lots of people have fire safety equipment in their home such as smoke detectors, fire alarms, fire extinguishers and fire blankets, but have you thought about the benefits of owning a home fire escape ladder?

It is a good idea to sit down and take stock of the layout of your home and think about the fire safety precautions you already have in place, and then consider if there is anything else that you can do to ensure that you and your family can get out safely in the event of a fire. If you live in an upper floor flat or have upper floors to your house, then a fire escape ladder is a simple and inexpensive addition you can make to your home fire protection arsenal which could save your lives.

You can choose between having a permanent fire escape ladder fixed to the outside of your home or alternatively you could choose a portable or drop-down type of ladder. Your choice will depend on the budget you have available.

If you are asleep upstairs in the middle of the night and a fire breaks out, then your smoke alarm should wake you, but it may not be possible for you to get out of your home via the downstairs exit. By having an escape ladder available you will eliminate the possibility of not being able to get out and it could well save the lives of you and your family.

Even if your upper floors are not very high off the ground, the prospect of jumping can be terrifying and much too dangerous in an already frightening situation - especially if you have children who may find the prospect of jumping impossible. The presence of a ladder means that you will be able to escape much more safely and calmly.

Once you have a ladder present in your home, it is a good idea to practice using it with all members of the family at least once a year. Make this practice a part of your routine maintenance, just like you should regularly check and change the batteries in your smoke alarm.
