Staying in Touch Whilst on Travelling: Cheaply

By Paul McIndoe
May 22, 2009
There's nothing quite as majestic as the prospect of travelling. Wherever your dream destination, be it the spiked peaks of Peru, the stretching plains of South Africa or the outback of Australia, it's hard not to feel the strong hint of romance when thinking about your future travel plans.

Unfortunately, as most people find, those plans are often spiked by the prospect of high costs. From flights through accommodation and travelling whilst in the country, the bills mount up and are enough to put anyone off. On top of that, there are things like food and clothes to think about, and even simple things like staying in touch with family and friends during your travels.

There are cheap ways to do that, however. In the advent of the internet, keeping connected with those you care about is easier than ever. With options such as email, instant messengers and social networking sites available, you can stay up-to-date with people with relative ease.

However, wherever you're travelling to may not have internet access. You may be used to the height of broadband, but there's a wealth of locations around the globe that don't even have access to the slowest form of dial up. How do you keep in touch then? And what if your location does have the internet but you simply want to hear the sound of someone's voice?

Thankfully, there's an answer to problems like these, and they can be as simple as getting the other person to contact you rather than vice versa. That is, if they're willing to spend the cash on what could mount up to a fairly hefty phone bill. Alternatively, there are excellent things like calling cards or phone service add-ons that allow for cheap international calls. That means you could have the service installed on your phone plan, or get your friends and family to consider it for their own, making cheap phone calls easily accessible and ensuring that nobody misses anybody else too much!

So whether you're way out in the middle of nowhere, trekking to Machu Picchu in Peru or having the time of your life in a bustling city like Beijing, there's always an option for you to keep in touch. Whether you seek out your own phone services or get friends and family to examine the option to call Peru or to search for cheap calls to China you can rest assured that the sound of a welcome voice is always around the corner.
