Make A Simple Pillar Candle With Different Styles

By Alan Biron
May 25, 2009
Candles are wonderfully romantic as well as being practical. Here are two ways you can make a simple pillar candle but each with a difference.

The main things you will need for your candles are paraffin candle wax, coloring and wick. These are readily available from candle shops, or online. If you really don't want to purchase the clear wax you can always get cheap colored candles and use those instead.

The heating method for both these candles is the same. Candle wax needs to be heated slowly. You will need to use a bain-marie set up so the wax does not come in direct contact with the heat, so a pot that can fit easily on top or sitting in a larger pot of water is ideal.

Choose a mold for your candle. You don't need to purchase expensive ones. For these two candles a milk carton will do well. The small ones give a great shape for the chunky candles and the taller ones work well for the lacy candles.

The Chunky Candle:
This takes a little bit of preparation but can be really effective. Decide on two colors you would like to use. It is probably easiest to select your darker color for the chunks. Melt the wax for the chunks adding a block of coloring. Pour into a baking dish and leave to set thoroughly.

Once set, cut the wax into small cubes or chunks.
Set up your wick inside the milk carton. You can either secure it with a little melted wax, or use a commercial wick base. Stack your cubes of colored wax all through the carton. It is a good idea to start from the center and this will also help to keep the wick straight.

Melt your second color and pour in, over and around the cubes. Leave the candle to cool completely then just peel off the carton.

The Lacy Candle:
For this candle you will need to have some small ice cubes prepared. Use very small ones rather than big and chunky. Set up your wick inside the mold as for the chunky candle.

To make sure you have a good centre for the candle to be able to burn well put a shield around the wick. A rolled sheet of plastic cut from a milk container can work well, or if you have a thin can with both ends removed, even better. In a pinch you could use a cardboard tube but grease it inside and out first. This shield doesn't need to be circular but should be at least an inch across.

Melt the candle wax you want to use. When it is ready remove from the heat while you prepare ice. Pack your small ice cubes into the milk carton outside the shield. Bring your wax back to pouring temperature and pour into the mold, including in the shield.

The hot wax will melt the ice leaving lacy holes all through it. As it begins to cool shift the shield around a little and over the cooling time gradually remove it from the mold. When your candle is completely set, tear off the milk carton carefully so as not to break off any lacy edges.
