The Science of Getting Rich - When You Want to Be Rich Then Philosophize
"This book is pragmatical, not philosophical; a practical manual, not a treatise upon theories. It is intended for the men and women whose most pressing need is for money; who wish to get rich first, and philosophize afterward."
Thus begin the preface of the classic book The Science of Getting Rich by Wallace D. Wattles, originally published in 1910. More than a century later, the book continues to change for the better the lives of those who study its principles.
What makes The Science of Getting Rich such a timeless treasure? The answer may well lie in the first two chapters of the book.
The first chapter starts with a validation of our desire to be rich. Even in today's generation, where talk about prosperity is every where, many of us still feel guilty about wanting to have a lot of money. What a relief then it is, for the ambitious who is struggling against unspoken norm about money, to learn that "It is perfectly right that you should desire to be rich."
After validating his students' deepest desire about riches, Wattles empowers them in the second chapter; "There is a science of getting rich, and it is an exact science, like algebra or arithmetic." Most of us have studied mathematics, and although we may not all be geniuses, we know that a little bit of study can yield miracles. If getting rich is just like algebra, then certainly most people can do it.
The rest of the book gives the actual formula that Wattles and many more after him for over a century now have used to become financially successful. He gives very practical advice on how to move from your current financial position to the one you seek.
The book is not about philosophy or making you feel good; it is truly about what you need to do now in your current business or occupation to change your life. Almost anyone successful uses a variation of the formula he presents, because achieving financial success is indeed, an applied science.
One of my favorite chapters in the book is titled "The Impression of Increase." This chapter teaches you how to live anyone with the impression that by associating with you, their lives automatically gets better. Success nowadays depends on your ability to add value to others' more than on anything else.
The greatest challenge today is not the lack, but rather the overload of information. With so many experts wanting to teach one aspect of success, where does one find a simple proven formula that will help elaborate a clear plan to attain financial independence?
The Science of Getting Rich promised to deliver just that, with mathematical precision. Whether this claim is presumptuous or not is for anyone to decide; however, the fact remains that after more than one hundred years, people still credit the book for their success.
