4 Tips For Selling Your Used Car
At some point, you're going to want to part with your treasured vehicle and upgrade to a new - or newer - model. The easy way out is to take your jalopy to a dealership and use it as a trade-in. However, you probably realize that you're unlikely to squeeze the highest dollar value from your used car that way. The alternative is to sell it to a private buyer.
Selling a used vehicle privately requires more effort than trading it in. But, with a methodical approach, you can make sure that you get top dollar. Below, I'll give you a 4-step plan to preparing your car for sale and unloading it for the best price possible.
Tip 1 - Have A Mechanic Take A Look
The person who eventually buys your car will probably want to have a mechanic take a look beforehand. It's a good idea for you to have your own mechanic run a few tests first. That way, you'll know whether there are any serious problems lurking under the hood that might make trying to sell it a waste of time. Your mechanic can also check the hoses, brakes, suspension, and look for any engine codes that suggest costly repairs are necessary.
Tip 2 - Get It Detailed
Not only will professional detailing give your used vehicle a new look, but it will also suggest to buyers that you take great care of it. Admittedly, it's an emotional response. A clean exterior does not preclude a failing transmission, deteriorated hoses, and an engine prone to overheating. But, it's hard to overstate the dollar-for-dollar value of getting your automobile professionally detailed. In effect, spending $80 upfront can make the difference between selling it quickly and seeing it languish in your driveway.
Tip 3 - Price It Right
If you want to sell your used vehicle for the best price possible, you'll need to identify its market value. I recommend that you visit the Kelley Blue Book website. You'll be able to determine your car's value based upon its condition and your location (similar models are priced slightly differently throughout the U.S.).
The Kelley Blue Book site will require you to answer a few questions before they assess the proper value. This is not the time to set aside your honesty. Answer candidly and the numbers they provide will be more accurate.
Tip 4 - Go Along For The Test Drive
Any savvy buyer will want to test drive your vehicle. You need to tag along. Oddly, a lot of owners are willing to allow private buyers to test drive their automobiles without going with them. This is a great way to become liable for accidents, crimes, or other shenanigans that happen in your absence. If you're in the passenger seat, the buyer will be less likely to rob a convenience store or go through a red light. What's more, you can give your sales pitch during the ride.
Selling your vehicle privately is the most effective way to get the highest price. Use the 4 tips above to pave the way for a smooth, problem-free transaction.
