Breaking the Slice

By Ross Gordon
May 30, 2009
One of the most frustrating and challenging things a beginning golfer often faces is the development of the dreaded slice - a golf swing that sends the ball far off course either to the left or the right of center. Many golfers try to power their way through and past this error, but the solution to the problem isn't in power or speed nor does it have anything to do with their actual swing path. The difference between a slice and a shot that lands nicely in the center of the green is all in the way the club face contacts with the golf ball.

If you've fallen into the slice zone, the way out is to be sure and square up the face of your golf club as it contacts the ball. When your club face is not square, it's called an "open" or "opening"contact. Here are a couple of tips on how to correct an open club face.

First, try loosening up your grip. Too much pressure in either your hands or your arms (and sometimes both) can cause a stiff swing that doesn't allow for the normal rotation of the golf club's face through the hit zone. Loosen up your shoulders, arms, wrists and hands. If you're holding your club like a weapon instead of a tool, you're going to hack at the golf ball and slice it. Imagine that you are going to grip the club just tight enough to keep it in your hands as you follow through.

Next tip - align your grip on the golf club. Watch to make sure that your hands haven't turned too far to the left. A proper right handed grip is more right aligned. (Reverse these if you are a left handed golfer.) Sometimes the best way to feel where the correct stroke lies is to intentionally go too far in the opposite direction. Try rotating your left hand so that it is positioned to the right of center. Either you'll make the needed compensation or you'll be able to feel how far you've gone from center and have a better idea how to position your hands to get it back.

Another option is to take a little time and practice swinging your golf club in front of you about knee high - almost like a baseball swing. Pay attention to the club face as you swing, you'll be able to see and feel it square away if you're holding it right. Take the visualization into your normal golf swing and you should ease up on the slice.
