Building A Stereo System On The Cheap

By Al Haneson
Jun 1, 2009
Are you interested in a new stereo system, but not interested in spending a lot of money? There's no reason to worry. It may take some effort, but building a stereo system for less cash is far from impossible.

Standard stereo systems come in a wide range of costs. Some are just $200 or $300. Others run in the thousands of dollars range. But this doesn't mean that you can't build your own new stereo system without shattering your budget.

Be prepared, though: While it's possible to build a stereo system without spending a fortune, doing so does take some extra time. It also takes a willingness to spend tedious hours searching thrift shops or online sites for the best stereo system bargains.

If you are willing to shop around for cheaper new and used stereo equipment, good places to start include eBay, Craigslist, area thrift shops and the classified ads in your local newspapers. It's possible to find some great bargains at these resources.

Start your search by going after the best pair of reasonably priced speakers you can find. Good speakers are the key to a stereo system. You might find some high quality ones being used as demonstration models at your local music store. Sales staffers might be willing to sell you a demonstration model for a good price.

Make sure, though, that these demonstration models come with a factory or dealer backed warranty. You don't want to be stuck with speakers that are suffering from serious problems.

You might also check out online classifieds for a pair of used speakers. And if you strike out there, there are always the local resale or thrift shops. These stores can be home to serious bargains.

You can follow these same steps when searching for the other components of your new stereo system. You might also consider reusing pieces from your previous stereo system if they are still in good working condition. This can save a significant amount of dollars.

By hunting on sites on the internet, and scouring the classified sections of your local newspapers, you'd be surprised at how many bargains you can uncover on stereo system equipment.

Yes, it'd be easier to simply plunk down the money for a completely new system. Shoppers have to determine for themselves if the aggravation and time of hunting for individual stereo system parts is more important than saving money.

But those shoppers committed to bargain hunting will be amazed at the quality of stereo systems that they can put together without spending a fortune to do so.
