How to Get a Slow Running Computer Back Up to Speed Again

By Ed Lathrop
Jun 2, 2009
It often seems that as time goes by a computer loses a significant amount of its original speed. Sometimes this lost speed is thought to be a normal part of computer aging but this is usually not the case. It takes a long time for a PC's parts to become old enough for their aging to affect the way the computer will perform.

This article will attempt to take the mystery out of what computer slow downs are all about and then we'll discuss how to fix the computer that has become slow and prevent it from acting up in the future.

The Resources

We often think in terms of putting more RAM into our computers in order to get them to go faster. This, of course, is a good way to improve a computer's speed after we have given it more demands by installing new software or hardware. However, if a computer has become slow for no apparent reason, more RAM is usually not going to help because in this case, something else has happened to cause the computer to slow down.

Resource Thieves

When a computer is suffering from poor performance and slow speed, you can bet there is something that has entered into our computer and is working inside without our approval and is taking our computer's speed away.

The culprit usually causing this type of computer slowdown is malware. The word malware is a contraction of the words malicious and software. Malware can be any type of computer virus or spyware. These things have the ability to steal a computer's resources and slow it down to the point it can be difficult to use.

For the purposes of this article, we do not need to differentiate between the different types of parasites. What is important is we realize we must scan our computers frequently for all types of spyware and all types of malware and viruses. This is the first step in computer maintenance because it will keep our PC's free of these things that destroy our computer's performance, not to mention the fact scanning for and keeping our computers free of spyware can save our identity from being stolen.

And The Registry!

Also, don't forget the importance of keeping your PC's registry clean! The computer's registry starts to build up corruption from the first day it is run. Normal use will cause meaningless and unhelpful entries to become logged in an operating system's registry. These types of entries are what are known as registry corruption and they need to be removed on a regular basis with a good registry cleaner. If they are not, they will cause your computer to lose some or all of its speed.

There are other things a PC owner can check when he or she is dealing with a slow computer. Here's one: look in the system tray. This area of the computer screen is located in the lower right hand corner. If you find any icons there, right click them and look for the option to close the programs these icons represent. If doing so gets some of your computer's speed back, you'll know one of these corresponding programs was stealing resources from the PC.

However, it is the regular use of a good spyware/virus/malware cleaner and a good registry cleaner that will do the most for keeping your computer running fast and efficiently for a long time to come. Also, don't forget the fringe benefit of keeping spyware out of your computer because it can keep your banking information and passwords out of the hands of criminals!
