Boys? Better Late Than Never!
Having reared both a son and a daughter (now adults), I look back at their teens and wonder at how abundantly indivisible their attitudes to reading were.
My daughter, two years younger, was stimulated with reading from about the age of three. She would surround herself with books, want to be read to, and "read" to herself (tell a story from the sequence of the pictures). During family holidays, she would harass me to write down little accounts of the day's activities - I would type them up, bind the pages, prepare a front and back cover, then have Laura illustrate the pages.
My son, Marcus, on the other hand, was disinterested in reading until the age of nine. I remember almost fainted one day when I discovered that not only had he been to the school library at lunchtime, but that he'd actually borrowed a book! Months later I found myself physically confiscating his books so that he could complete some of his chores.
What a turnaround! Having spoken to literally thousands of mothers during my teaching career, I can assure you that there is hope for your boys.
Because of the physical nature of boys, they'd prefer to be outside kicking or dribbling a ball, shooting for hoops, riding a bike, climbing trees and so on, rather than sitting down quietly with a good book which is certainly not high on their list of priorities (if there at all!).
Be encouraging. Be supportive. Be resourceful. Be prepared. Be patient until that time.
It is very important to have a strategy ready when they do discover the world of information.- Ensure you stay aware of your child's educational progress
- Ensure you have picture dictionaries, fact books and other non-fiction books for you boys in the house or even leave it strategically in their rooms
- Ensure you find the name and number of a professional Tutor or Tuition Centre to help you child to catch up if behind
Like young buds on a bush, your son will most likely blossom when the time and conditions are just right for them.
