It's hard to believe, but a lot of men are still intimidated by women, even if they give off visible clues to the contrary. Subtly giving him the okay to strike up a conversation by smiling at him or returning a greeting does quite a bit to improve the chances of any future relationship.
People fall into all sorts of verbal or non-verbal miscommunications. They talk past each other instead of to one another. This can cause a relationship to fail before it even starts. But if you take care to remember a few of the little things such as a smile, most of the hard stuff will have been accomplished.
