How To Get Raccoons Off Your Property

By George Pinto Sam Ellis

Raccoons are mammals and mostly reside in forests. But because they are highly adaptive they can survive in areas other than forests such as marshes, along coasts, and even in cities and urban areas. Due to this reason they are classified as a nuisance and are part of the notorious pest control list.

Raccoons making the attic and chimney of a house their shelter, overturning garbage cans, taking pet food from kitchens and fruits from trees, making a ruckus with household animals (e.g. dogs, cats), and the prospect of transmitting rabies are some of the usual complaints that home owners make against this mammal. That is why individuals who are plagued with raccoons take the necessary steps to get rid of them without touching the nerves of animal welfare advocates.

These are some ways to limit the damage inflicted by this animal. If you discover raccoons in your house, most likely in attics or chimneys, you have to make sure that the raccoon are not comfortable. Do not confront the raccoon mother directly because she will become aggressive in order to protect her young. You have to illuminate the place with very bright lights, or provide a constant unappealing sound. A waterproof radio will do the trick. Clothes drenched with ammonia could possibly discourage them. If the above methods fail then you need to contact a professional pest control agent.

When leftover foods are about to be thrown out always make sure that you pack them in plastic bags twice. You must never forget to cover these bags with bleach or some kind of cleanser before placing them in the garbage cans. Always keep the surrounding area of your house clean of fallen fruit, waste papers or other garbage. Always double check the houses surroundings in order to ensure that no raccoons can be attracted to your residence by waste and fruit laying around.

Always keep your garbage bins lids closed tightly by pinning them down with a heavy object. If you can buy metal garbage cans with easily attachable lids. Always dispose any trash and waste as quickly as you can in order to prevent the raccoons from smelling them.

If you are going to leave your house for a long vacation, or even for a short walk, always put the garbage bins inside the house or possibly in the garage to keep the raccoons from foraging the contents of the cans.

Build a strong fence around the house especially the garden or yard. This will give the raccoons a hard time to reach your waste bins and may discourage them totally to go inside the property.
