You Can't Beat the Flavor of BBQ Cooking
If you dread the thought of cooking in a hot kitchen through the summer, you need to consider barbequing. Sure, you can cook your food indoors on an electric grill, but the tastiest way to get the true flavor and aroma of BBQ is through outdoor cooking. You can choose from a charcoal or gas grill, or maybe you prefer a smoker. There are lots of BBQ tips to spice up your grilling, like sauces, rubs and marinades. There are lots of online recipe sites, as well as cookbooks in the store, that have instructions for barbequing any kind of food you can think of. Any way you grill it up, though, the end result will be delectable.
Barbeque sauces can be made from a variety of bases, each of which adds a unique flavor to the meat. There are sauces based on tomato, mustard, vinegar or even fruit. As well, you can use a sauce as a marinade for whatever meat you're grilling up. There are also marinades and sauces that are applied during the cooking process. Finally, there's a sauce used to coat the meat right before taking it off the grill, or to add to the meat when it's on your plate.
Rubs are another BBQ staple, and are often used along with sauce. Rubs are a mixture of herbs and spices that are rubbed right into the raw meat and then penetrate more thoroughly while the meat is cooking. The advantage of rubs over sauces is that they cling to the meat and don't drip away. Therefore more flavor is imparted.
These three seasoning techniques can be used together for maximum effect. For instance, let the meat soak in the marinade for about 24 hours, then add the rub mixture. Once the meat is on the grill and cooking, use some sauce to enhance the flavor and tenderness.
Also, there is more than one way to barbeque. Indoor cooking on a grill is always a possibility. However, an outdoor grill is the more flavorful option because of the added smoke flavor. You have the option of using a gas grill or a charcoal grill. Some people prefer charcoal because of the enhanced flavor. Either way, consider using wood chips. The meat gets a flavor boost due to the aromatic smoke produced by the wood chips while cooking.
Keep in mind that barbeque cooking sometimes takes longer than indoor cooking. Some foods are pretty quick to cook, such as hamburgers and hot dogs. But if you're planning on serving up something like ribs or roast, you'll need to cook on low heat for a long period of time to get the best results.
