The Difference Between Bonus Codes And Referral Codes

Codes of all kinds exist freely in the online poker world. Different sites give them out at different times for different reasons and the lack of standardization is the main reason as to why there are so many different types of codes around. While it is tempting to think of bonus codes, marketing codes, referral codes and other code types as simply the same thing with a different name, the truth of the matter is that there are some important differences between the different code types. Understanding these differences will allow you to get the most out of each code that you use.

The first thing that you need to understand along these lines is that all of the codes start by doing the same thing at a basic level. That thing that they do is to keep all of the tracking information that comes with every new signup to their website. Whenever someone new signs up for a particular online poker site, things like where they came from and how they heard of the site are important to the site so that they can better focus their marketing dollars into streams of marketing that return better results. The codes are a way of tracking who came from where based on the code that they use. At their most basic level, all of the codes you will see in online poker will do this.

Beyond this level however, almost every single code that you use will have a second purpose. That purpose is to use the tracking for proper affiliate bonuses. Different poker sites have bonuses that they offer to affiliates for getting people to sign up for real money accounts with the poker site. Whenever someone signs up for a real money account with a poker site, the affiliate account connected to the code they used gets a bonus as a result. Just about every code coming from a site that has affiliate programs will also have this function built into it.

Now that it has been established that just about every code has the first two functions, it is time to differentiate bonus codes from marketing codes. Bonus codes give the player a little something extra for signing up. They take an already established first time deposit bonus and do something to it to make it better. This could be increasing the amount, increasing the percentage match or decreasing the release requirements, but a bonus code will do something to make a first time deposit bonus more attractive. Referral or marketing codes might create a first time deposit bonus out of thin air where none exists before, but only bonus codes can make existing bonuses juicier to the player that claims them.
