Rude t shirts are crude and cool

By Rhonda Elis
Jun 9, 2009
Recently I spotted"SAVE the Drama fo yo Mama" on a tee shirt perplexed I was, by the content. Soon I saw another somewhat rude t-shirt "Talk To The Hand". My curiosity was won over by the number of rude t shirts I observed. I began looking more closely at the messages on tee shirts at the mall. A remarkable quantity of them had the same kind of insult mindset. I was surprised. I teach people to communicate without insult.

The majority of these rude t - shirts were not obscene, just a bit edgy. Many were being worn by teenagers, which I expected. However adults who looked like they were part of the mainstream culture, the working guys and gals, the professionals off- duty wore many too. Where is this market coming from? Where are these tee shirts coming from? Is ridicule and sassy backtalk the main mindset of our society? Have I been living in isolation so long that I had not noticed this trend?

Soon I discovered the online market is hot for odd and outrageous rude t-shirts. I found one company that has a successful 8-year history of selling irreverent and rude humor. Most are purchased as gag gifts. This is a profitable niche market with a noteworthy amount of competition among distributors. Some sites actually offer advice on how you can set up your own business selling rude t shirts. Pooshirts.com is one of those sites.

People rate rude t-shirts in contests. It is amazing. It is a sort of American Idol for the world of tee shirts. Some are rude, some are mean and nasty, many are funny. Some are grotesque.

I thought there was nothing more I could learn about rude T shirts and then, I ran across a site that specializes in short and sassy videos about T-shirts. You watch the 2 or 3-minute video and then make your comments and ratings in comparison to other T-shirts that have been entered in the contest. This site is slick. It is too easy to waste time watching these little tiny videos. So what it is only 3 more minutes. It is clearly designed for people with short attention spans.

Non-verbal images make the rude tee shirts easy to understand in any language and you can find them all over the world. Their popularity is partly because they touch common threads from the urban scene, particularly from the youth scene. When I first saw them it seemed that they were only for guys, but the number of gals wearing these rude t-shirts altered that opinion for me.

So who wears rude t shirts? Almost anyone. Almost anywhere. Almost anytime. Now is the era for these shirts. The commentary is alive and so is the spirit of an otherwise apathetic and dysfunctional economically distraught and war torn world. You might not want to give one as a mother's day gift. But hey, maybe Mom has the same sense of wit that you do. Rude t shirts are certainly contemporary and stylish. Go for it.
