MLB Tickets - Hat Logo Design Battle: Yankees vs. Red Sox
The Yankees and the Red Sox have a long-standing feud that will probably never end. While most of the animosity between the fans of these two historic teams takes place within the athletic arena (i.e. who beat who in the playoffs, whose hitters are better, whose pitchers are more dominating), one area of competition between New York and Boston that's woefully underappreciated is fashion. Which team has a better hat logo? It's high time this debate was settled once and for all. Of course, if you get tickets to a Red Sox-Yankees game online, you're free to discus this issue at length with the fans seated nearby.
Boston Red Sox: The Boston Red Sox have had one of the most steady hat insignia designs over the course of the years. While other teams change up their logo, the Red Sox have been remarkably consistent, going with a stylized letter B for decades. While the use of an initial as a hat logo is not at all original, it's at least traditional. At some points the team has elected to use a picture design, the one with the two red stockings, but the two socks design is only popular with fans who purchase MLB tickets to Boston Red Sox games, not with the actual team on the field.
The B is highly recognizable for its distinct style. Unlike other university and pro sports initials, the Red Sox B is not a block letter, but rather a rarely-used old-time font more similar to Gothic print than bubble lettering. The rounded bulbs of the B have points coming out of the middle of them, similar to thorns or nipples. The intersection of the vertical line and the bottom and top of the B are flared with evenly measured hooks. The B appears to have a fancy, dignified and historical air about it. While the letter B is not symmetrical, the image as a whole is well-balanced. Typically the B is red, with a thin white outline in front of a midnight navy blue background.
New York Yankees: While Boston is cheered for their traditional, relatively unwavering logo and cap insignia design, the Yankees are the gold standard in terms of stick-to-itiveness. The classic superimposed NY have been around since at least 1913, and the Yanks have always gone with navy blue and white. The hat is always dark blue with a solid white logo, and they've only used the initials. They've never been tempted to put a drawing or image on their hat like so many other teams.
The NY is oddly constructed, with the Y slightly taller and skinnier than the N. The N also has curved lines, whereas the Y's lines are mostly straight. The ends of the lines and the connections within the lettering are flared and exaggerated, but not so much so that the letters ever appear cartoonish. While the image is clearly not symmetrical (notice the left vertical line of the N's curve compared to the right side), it has a kind of equilibrium that suggests perfection, while achieving perfection only in glancing perception.
Decision: The Red Sox lose points for their color scheme. Because they're one of the many, many MLB teams who chose to have team colors that are both red and blue (like the Braves, Cardinals, Twins, Rangers, Indians, etc.) they have to switch up their hats too often. While the blue background is more common, it would be best for all involved if the Sox would be more original with their color scheme. The Yankees hats have stayed the course, never blinking in this game of chicken we call hat insignia design.
