Let's Expel The Myths: What Are Hemorrhoids?

Aug 17, 2007
What are hemorrhoids? Despite being very much a often seen problem for people of all ages, there still exists many myths surround hemorrhoids. They are an inflammation of veins in the area of the anus and rectum. As a result, swelling and bleeding can occur. They are usually also quite itchy and a constant irritation for sufferers. Depending on the nature of the condition, the appropriate treatment will differ. They also vary in how much pain or irritation they can cause, as well as size, and whether external or internal. If you think you may have hemorrhoids, you should consult a doctor as only he/she can give you an accurate diagnosis and prognosis. Although hemorrhoids are usually not serious, some of their symptoms are similar to more serious diseases, hence why you should consult a doctor even if your problems are not severe.

Hemorrhoids Come In Many Different Types

There are a few major types of hemorrhoid, and not only are their symptoms very different but the appropriate treatment also is.

The first type are external hemorrhoids. These are ones that form on the outside of the anus. They usually give a lot of pain and itching -- many patients report that sitting down can sometimes be uncomfortable. Usually, the appropriate treatment is for soothing warm baths and various ointments that can be applied to the specific area. Sometimes, they can grow and a blockage or blood clot can occur: your doctor's assistance will then be needed and he may remove the clot or sometimes part of the vein as well. A diet high in fibrous substances such as vegatables can deter these types of hemorrhoids from developing and enlarging.

The second type are internal hemorrhoids. These are not visible because they are beyond the anus and inside the rectum. They usually are not as itchy or irritating as external hemorrhoids but they can often bleed. Hence why you should see your doctor if you find any bleeding - whilst it may just be hemorrhoids, it could be something more severe.

The third type is a prolapsed hemorrhoid. This is where an internal hemorrhoid decides to exit the anus and hangs out. Mostly, they can be pushed back into the anus where they came from.

Treatment Options for Hemorrhoids

Treatment for hemorrhoids is usually ointments and warm baths in the first case. If these fail to give sufficient relief, the hemorrhoid may be removed. This usually involves some minor surgery, such as applying a rubber band to the affected area until the hemorrhoid loses its blood supply and falls off.
