How Stillages Helped Organise My Workplace

By Thomas Pretty

Laboratories aren't typically tidiest of places to work - there are a lot of items which people need constantly so they tend to be left out on the workbenches, there are lab coats everywhere and to the untrained eye most laboratories look like a mess. Though this is usually the organised kind of mess where everyone knows exactly where everything is, if something goes missing it can often be an absolute nightmare trying to find it.

After a few test kits went missing and several employees spent most of the day looking for them - myself included - we walked into our line managers office and said that something had to be done about the state of the lab. He was reluctant to do anything about it directly but said that if I took responsibility for organising it, he would find money in the budget for some storage. Though doing it myself wasn't the solution I was looking for, at least something would be done and we could organise the lab a bit better.

My manager gave me a website to look through and told me how much money there was to spend and I began my search for some storage solutions for the lab. I felt we needed something which was large enough to comfortably store all the items on the benches in each room, but ideally to be able to see inside them as well so we would know what was in each one. Looking through the website, it seemed that several collapsible stillages would be the ideal solution.

The stillages I decided on had some mesh sides, making it easy to see what was inside them, and also cut down on the weight, meaning they were easier to move out from under the benches when we needed access to them. Their being collapsible meant that they would be able to be folded away and stored if we ever found ourselves refurbishing the lab or if my manager authorised some more shelving or cupboards in the building.

The stillages were well within the budget my manager had put aside for me so I ordered another, larger one for the gas bottles we had standing loose in the plant room, meaning my storage and organisation venture both tidied up the lab and also made it safer.

They were delivered quickly and I was soon assembling the stillages and going through the process of organising the lab, room by room. Though it took a long time to do, it has definitely been worth it; we're working faster and more efficiently now there are no hours lost through hunting for kits or chemicals and the laboratory definitely looks cleaner and more organised, which has made everyone involved happy.
