Electronic Cigarettes - An Introduction
Electronic Cigarettes are in the news. A battle is being waged between electronic cigarette supporters who consist of the distributers (obviously) and groups of ex smokers who have discovered that the e cigarette works for them in helping them quit tobacco cigarettes. In the other corner there is passionate support for not allowing the e cigs to be imported and sold with the main argument seemingly being the fact that the electronic cigarettes have not yet been officially tested or declared safe.
All well and good you might think, but what exactly are these electronic cigarettes? What are they really trying to achieve and who will win the battle?
E cigs are not a fancy or deluxe version of the traditional cigarette. In the strictest sense, because they don't contain any tobacco they are not actually a cigarette at all. The word cigarette originates from the Spanish word 'cigarro' which according to dictionary.com is apparently a kind of tobacco from Cuba. Therefore I imagine it is fair to describe an e cig as a tobacco free cigarette.
Apart from the absence of tobacco, what else do the distributors of electronic cigarettes claim?
That there are no carcinogens present in an e cig
Meaning that an e cig should be healthier and safer than a tobacco cigarette
That there are no toxins present compared to more than 4000 in normal cigarettes
That they are legal to smoke in public places
That they can help smoker in their quest to quit smoking
No passive smoking
Can be up to 80% cheaper than smoking regular cigarettes
Nicotine is present in an electronic cig but this comes in the shape of replaceable cartridges which come in various strengths of nicotine, so a smoker may be able to start on strength of nicotine that he or she is used to but can gradually reduced the strength in the cartridges they are smoking. It is possible to end up with a cartridge that contains no nicotine at all!
There are many companies now distributing electronic cigarettes, a brief look around the internet and you will find hundreds of them. Many of these sites have lots more info about e cigs, the pros and cons, the ingredients, the price ranges and comparisons with regular tobacco cigarettes.
The choice is vast and the market competitive and if you are looking to purchase, it will be up to you as to which distributor you choose. Many of them have different offers and lots of them have tutorials on their site to show you exactly how electronic cigarettes work
