What You Need To Know Before Lifting
When considering a body lift kit for your vehicle it is going to be necessary to shop around a bit first. Foremost on your list of what to know is whether or not there is a lift kit for your vehicle. For trucks and SUV's there is more than likely one for you, however on smaller trucks such as a 2wd you are going to need to confront the question on whether or not you want one in the first place. Be aware that a body lift kit is different then a suspension lift kit. The former is designed to do nothing more then lift the frame. It will give you a few inches and improve the look of your truck but that is about it. It in no way effects the suspension which means you're off road capabilities will remain the same.
Body lift kits are less expensive then suspension lift kits because of this and also they do not affect the ride of your vehicle. When installing a suspension lift kit, this effects the suspension, engine and chassis which can in the end affect the starting speed and turning capability. Off-road the benefits outweigh the costs, but if you are just looking for a 'cooler' looking vehicle then the body lift kit is about as far as you need to go. Using a body lift kit will in no way affect your factory parts, especially in regards to the suspension parts. This will eliminate the risk of problems later on. This of course totally depends on how much you like the factory ride.
A body lift kit can affect your off road capability, however it will in no way affect it to the extreme. This type of lift kit allows you to replace your standard tires with larger tires which will enable you to traverse off road territory more easily. However, if you are planning on using your truck often off road it will be better to get a suspension lift kit as this will give you better clearance which will better protect the underneath of your vehicle from off road debris such as rocks.
In the end it is all about what you want from your truck. If you are just going for the looks then definitely take the cheaper route and go with the body lift kit. If however you are wishing to boldly go where no other truck has gone before then a suspension lift kit is definitely the option you wish to go with.
