The psychic business is thriving. Millions of Americans contact self-proclaimed professional psychics on a daily basis for reasons ranging from relationship problems, to spiritual disturbances, to health problems " even to talk with the dead! Psychic abilities are so popular that they have a strong and vibrant presence in Americas pop culture, with references to psychics in comic books, movies, television shows, video games, and elsewhere. This article will offer a brief overview of psychic influences in todays pop culture in those mediums listed above as examples of how widespread and mainstream psychic abilities have become in the 21st century world. As mentioned above, the psychic world is diverse and has made its mark on todays world. Some of these influences are outlined below:

The art of the psychic has made itself known on television extensively over the past few years. One popular example is the show Medium on NBC, which tells the story of a woman (played by Patricia Arquette) who has psychic visions that she uses to help people and solve crimes. Psychics also have talk shows that they use to offer advice to viewers, like with John Edward (of Crossing Over fame) and Sylvia Browne. Television offers a glimpse into the psychic world (both real and make-believe) for millions across the country, right into their living rooms. Another well popular TV show is Ghost Whisper. This is where a psychic helps the dead cross over to the other side by closing issues that are left in the real world. This is an extremely popular TV show that has been around for years!

Many movies have been made over the years about psychic concepts. Perhaps one of the most dramatic examples is the movie Carrie based off a work by Stephen King in which the main character has the power of telekinesis (or the ability to move objects with the mind). Another wildly popular movie based off of psychic powers is The Sixth Sense, in which Haley Joel Osment plays a child who claims to be able to see dead people.

Psychic concepts have also been made into books and comic books, such as The Dead Zone by Stephen King (in which a man develops psychic mental powers after a near-death experience). In comic books, the popular X-Men series features two main characters - Dr. Xavier and Jean Grey " that have mutant powers of telepathy and telekinesis. These books and comic books are enormously popular and serve to create a fanciful world of imagination centered on psychic abilities.

No matter what the medium, portrayals of psychic abilities in pop culture offer an insight into the world of imagination that reflects a human desire to know more about the world around us. Whether or not psychics are real and psychic powers really exist, their presence in pop culture is sure to entertain and inspire well into the 21st century. So the next time your wanting to watch something different on TV try watching one of these talked about shows or movies, you wont be disappointed!
