Top Tips for Avoiding Viruses

By John McElborough

If you know anything about computers and the internet, you should know there is one thing you want to avoid above pop-ups, namely viruses. These viruses are being designed all the time by nihilistic hackers and programmers, so often it's best to have IT Support in control of your security, as they will have more up-to-date records of new viruses and programs trying to attack your computer. However, there are some simple steps you can take to reduce the risk of your computer contracting a virus.

Regularly update your anti-virus software

If you are lucky enough to have some anti-virus software, and many computers and laptops come with free software for 6 or 12 months, ensure that you update it as regularly as possible. As new viruses are born, the anti virus software providers update their software to tackle the new virus, so it's important that the version you are using on your computer is as up-to-date as possible. Most anti-virus software will alert the user periodically, reminding them to update the software and virus definitions. If you read about a new killer virus in the newspaper, then be sure to update your anti-virus software immediately.

Don't use Outlook Express for your email

Outlook Express is known to be a gateway for viruses, so it can be a good idea to use a more contained email client, which means that the only vulnerability occurs when you download an infected attachment. In Outlook Express, just viewing an email in the preview pain can result in a website being loaded, with many infected scripts, onto your computer. Separate email clients are preferable, because they are more secure.

Be careful when opening email attachments

When opening an attachment, ensure that you trust the person who has sent you the file, and that you know what the file is supposed to be. It is a good idea to check file extensions, as this can give a good indication of tricks; if someone sends a file which is supposed to be a picture, but then appears with the file extension .exe, an executable file, then don't trust it. .exe files are like program files and if opened, they can make severe changes to your computer. Only download file types you are familiar with, and avoid .exe, .com, .pif, .js, .vbs, .shs and .dot files like the plague.

Also beware of double file extensions, such as Document1.doc.exe. The default Windows setting means that file extensions are seldom displayed. To change this, open My Computer, and from the View menu, select Options, and then View. Ensure that the 'Hide file extensions for known file types' box is unchecked.
There are a million ways to avoid viruses and the environment is changing all the time, so the best advice is to seek an IT Support professional or contact an IT helpdesk. However, there are some simple steps you can take yourself to try to keep your computer safe.
